Unity08 - Voter revolt or dream machine for major parties?
I WANT to believe that Unity08 is a good thing, I really do!
Certainly Howard Dean's campaign (before he folded his tent and went home to "mama") made inroads into a huge independent grassroots base, and really showed the potential of the internet to organize that base.
But I have a sneaking suspicion that Unity08 is more of a temporary ploy for disgruntled Dems and their Repub friends who will return to the fold, bringing their campus contacts with them. The students will of course do the legwork for whatever lesser evil the Unity08 ticket comprises (if they even get that far). CommonDreams quotes from a press release:
"We are not in this be spoilers or to hurt either party. We are in this to win, give the White House a Unity Team that can provide leadership, and along the way jolt each party back toward the voters in the center. 2008 is an historic moment of truth for the parties, the people and the nation,” said Bailey and Jordan...
Well, Unity08 seems to me to be nothing but a fundraising machine (they're handily organized as a 527) for the lesser of two evils, whoever it will be in 2008.

LOL - ditto. This is for me actually a growing issue. I've spent much of the last 3 - 4 years backing the Dems because I'm so disgusted with the GOPers. But, increasingly I'm becoming fed up with the Dems too.
I like Howard Dean, I really do. He's got, as they say, "big brass ones," and that appeals to me very much. Especially when he was saying things that got him roundly criticized by both Dems and GOPers. He's like the anti-2000 Gore. But he's made a deal with the devil as DNC Chair and now has to pay the piper.
I met Dean at a booksigning in... late summer 2004. When I got my 60 seconds of face time I used it to talk about Independents and how many of us support the kinds of things he had advocated but that many (most?) of us were never, ever going to become Democrats just because we supported what he'd fought for. He really keyed in on that and briefly gave me his undivided attention while he stabbed a finger at me and exclaimed, "you are absolutely right!" So I know that he understands to some extent both the mindset of Independents and our role in the process. But even so... he's made a deal with the devil.
Thanks, Kevin!
