Shakespeare still speaks to us
I was helping my boyfriend read a few passages from Merchant of Venice and found this passage to be just as relevent today as 400 years ago.
From these guys
So may the outward shows be least themselves:
The world is still deceived with ornament.
In law, what plea so tainted and corrupt,
But, being seasoned with a gracious voice,
Obscures the show of evil? In religion,
What damned error, but some sober brow
Will bless it and approve it with a text,
Hiding the grossness with fair ornament?

Mmmm... yeah, that definitely still applies today!
Shakespeare was brilliant not just as a wordsmith but also as a social commentator. At one point he fell out of favor with the King because of his pointed commentary disguised as entertainment.
