Westlund petition question answered
As a petition gatherer for the Ben Westlund for Governor campaign I recently had a question posed to me that I was unable to answer. So I asked the Westlund campaign staff.
The questioner wants to sign the Westlund petition to help get him on the general election ballot, and as a non-affiliated voter she didn't intend to vote for any gubernatorial primary candidates. But, there is an opening on the Oregon Supreme Court for which she has a definite preference and intends to cast a vote on her primary ballot (in Oregon registered voters who aren't Dems or GOPers only get to vote on nonpartisan races in the primary election).
The confusion stems from a new elections law here in Oregon which was designed to make it harder for a dark horse candidate to siphon votes away from a mainstream candidate.
Anyway, the answer from the Westlund campaign is:
Anyone registered as an independent(non-affiliated) will be able to sign
the petition and vote and this will not effect their signatures on our
ballot. However if you are registered Republican or Democrat, when your
ballot is received at the county clerks office we are no longer allowed to
count your signature for Ben. We are encouraging people who support Ben
to register as a non-affiliated voter.
Essentially what that means is that anyone who is registered as a Democrat or as a Republican and who also wishes to get Ben on the general election ballot cannot cast any vote in the primary election because their partisan (by virtue of their registration status) ballot will nullify their petition signiture when it's received by the county clerk's office for their county of residence.
