The Tide Changes
I missed an Oregonian piece from earlier this month about changing political tides in Oregon. The Westlund gubernatorial campaign has a copy of it on their website and that's where I found it.
(T)wo men flee their parties. One a life-long Republican,
"Opposing abortion and gay marriage will not fix anything. And don't tell me it's God's law you're following. It's like they say -- if Christ came down and saw what was going on in his name, he'd change his name to Bob.
"Instead of telling people how to live their lives, tell me this -- how are we going to fund schools?"
Still, becoming a Democrat was not an option. "No issues, no leaders, no vision." Tearnen doesn't like that he will no longer be able to vote in primaries. But the Republican push to the extreme right, he said, left him with no choice. "I had to be able to look at myself in the mirror in the morning."
...the other a life-long Democrat.
"People say, 'You realize you can't vote in the primary.' " Hayes said. "But the primary is not what I'm interested in. I'm interested in good government and good leadership. And I'm not seeing that anywhere in Oregon.
"Maybe I'm not your typical blue-collar worker. But we're not a bunch of beer-swilling morons; we're a lot smarter than people give us credit for. Both parties have abandoned us in favor of extreme political views. It's our job to reject that."
Today both are Independents. Each for their own reasons, but the common ground is greater than the differences.

Look for more and more of this to happen as the two parties drift farther and farther off to never-neverland - their far fringes. Talk radio and the talking heads are beginning to say the same things and take the same points of view, regardless of whether they are "conservative" or "liberal".
There has never been a better time for an independent, an Independent, or a third party candidate to rise up and take this country's popular vote - NEVER, at least not in my lifetime.
The GOP and the DNC have brought this upon themselves...
I agree--look for more of this to happen in years to come. I used to be a Democrat. I come from a family of Democrats, union men, blue-collar working men who worked really hard and took care of their families. Many in that family were conservative Christians, Southern Democrats. I had voted for Clinton, then voted for Bush. Somewhere between Clinton and Bush I realized I was not happy with the Dems and while I voted for Bush I refused to become a Republican. There are many more thirtysomethings like me. We're tired of the same old crap from the right and left. We are happy in the middle. People like to call us indecisive but that's wrong because actually while we are in the middle, we are able to make decisions and probably more clearly than most BECAUSE WE SEE BOTH SIDES!
By the way I'm a Libra, we see all sides of everything so moving towards being an Indie didn't surprise me. My husband switched too. It really is a "movement" of sorts.
Thanks for the blog, I love it, finally a place to go to feel at home!
Thanks, Jessica. That's what I love to hear... more Indies!
I added your blog to the list too.
