Dean Scream v. Bush Deficit

Dean Scream

Howard Dean took a LOT of flack for his boisterous passion. And apparently that was enough to dissuade some from supporting him in the 2004 presidential race, even though the infamous "Dean Scream" was taken completely out of context and was even digitally altered by some media organizations to make it seem far wilder than it actually was. He was yelling because of the background noise. But, that background noise was digitally tamped down so that it appeared that Dean was just venting raw emotion... which took many folks aback when they saw it on the news.

Personally, I didn't much care about the scream. I was first turned on to Howard Dean by my friend Carla at Preemptive Karma. Although at the time I really wasn't interested because I'd bought into the spin about him being a far lefty. But, not long afterwards I ran across the now defunct Dean Independents blog and was soon hooked.

Two things mainly attracted me to Howard Dean. 1. He struck me as speaking his mind rather than just telling folks what he thought they wanted to hear. I wanted a president that would be honest with me! And, 2., the fact that as Gov. of Vermont he had pushed for and signed a series of common sense tax cuts which weren't heavily tilted in favor of the wealthiest 1%, unlike Bush, and Dean STILL managed to balance the budget every single year he was Gov.

The Economic Policy Institute released an Economic Snapshot a couple days ago which seeks to compare Bush's handling of the national economy with what Howard Dean might have produced.

Bush Deficit

Bush creates record deficits projected well into the future and some people thought Howard Dean's passion was an inappropriate character trait for a president???

Isn't the Dean numbers based on assumptions that are in no way provable?

On the flip side though, If I recall correctly, Dean ran a pretty tight budget in Vermont.

I do like the title and I think I'll take dean's scream over Bush's deficits (and all the other crap) any day.

Sure. The numbers for both are based on assumptions that are spelled out in the EPI piece if you follow the link.

At best It's a guestimate, admittedly. But, I think it nicely illustrates the very different fiscal and political priorities of each man and how those affect the pocketbook of Joe and Jane Taxpayer.

Interestingly enough, the estimates cited by EPI came from the Congressional Budget Office.

I only know of two Bush priorities. Cut taxes and increase the defense spending.

These budgets over the last 6 years are the most irresponsible in history, IMO.
