Don't bring me down

One of the widest read Indies on the web, Joe Gandelman, both supports the Iraq War and opposes the immediate pullout of our troops from Iraq. So it wasn't a matter of knee-jerk reactionaryism when Joe called Bush out in no uncertain terms for trying to squelch dissenting voices from opposition politicians over Iraq. (via another Indie, Ron at Middle Earth Journal)

On a different note... an AP/Ipsos poll last week found that "[a] majority of Americans want the Bush administration to get court approval before eavesdropping on people inside the United States, even if those calls might involve suspected terrorists."

That was a stunning post. I wish it would be published far and wide because he hit it on the head. I've never understood Bush's attempts to squelch debate.

The following is the best part of the post.

Presidents don't get to set limits on political debate which centers on the credibility of their own and their cabinet members' statements, the accuracy of original information presented to the public to justify the war, the competency of the administrative policies and execution of the policies...particularly during a year in which Americans will generally vote for one of two parties. And, in a Democracy's tradition, that means FREE DEBATE. If the Democrats' act dumb and irresponsible there will be a price for them.

Joe is definitely one of the good guys. He and the Colonel over at Voice of a Vet (another of the good guys!) helped me launch the Independent Voter WebRing. Joe had a glitch with his blog software and never ended up getting onboard for a variety of reasons beyond just the software problem. But, we stayed in semi-regular email contact for a while there. He and Carla used to email semi-regularly when we first started PK too.

He certainly nailed it with that post.
