What if...?

What if it had been terrorists who blew the levees in New Orleans instead of a hurricane we knew was heading that way?

What have those billions of dollars spent in the name of a safer and more secure nation bought us?

There is certainly room for improvement.

Kevin, I left a comment in reply to your comment at my site, but I'll state what I said here too.

It is my understanding that under the current laws of the land, the same FEMA assistance to a state would prevail be it terrorist attack or natural disaster. There are conflicting laws regarding this though. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the feds can take charge. According to the Consitution and numerous other statutes, they cannot. I am not a constitutional lawyer though so there may be another set of laws which I have not seen.

Clearly there are ways in which the process can be streamlined, but to what effect this will have on state's rights as afforded in the Consitution I do not know. We as a nation though better figure it out.

Thank you for the comment.

Chad, I certainly do agree that we as a nation better figure it out one way or another.

I'm a moderate when it comes to what size of government we should pay for via our taxes. But, one thing that really pisses me off is seeing my tax dollars dumped into an ineffective bureacracy.

I think there is a strong case to be made for a group effort being more effective than individual efforts in many cases. Disaster response and military forces being two excellent examples off the top of my head. BUT... if that group effort (FEMA) isn't effective then the entire thing is less effective than individual responses and we'd be better off letting folks keep more of their tax money. N'est pas?

What I'm getting at is that this is much, much bigger than just playing political blame games. Those who see nothing more than blame games going on are themselves blinded by their own desire to cast political blame. IMHO of course.

there are several striking things about the whole situation -
1) given the amount of space affected and the amount of people - why is the only focus on New Orleans? My guess is that there are a flood of people in the south cleaning up a big mess. As resources flow into the area - can we independents focus on keeping a check-list of which politicians must go and why?
I nominate 434 members of congress who have punted the football. I think that given a straight means of doing this with total representation, i would be willing to remove number 435 too - but only if Ron Paul will accept the leadership position in the executive branch.
BTW - kevin - can you crosslink the zone with indiw castle?

never did get past one - too much going on. BTW - where's Jim?

Doc, You're already listed on the blogroll here as The Zone. Would you prefer I rename it Howdt R Space?

I doubt Ron Paul could get elected to the executive branch. He's too honest. The $pecial Intere$t$ would bury him under an avalanche of the only medium they ultimately care about - $$$.

If by Jim you mean James... I dunno. Looks like he's still putting stuff up at Independent Country. Beyond that, I dunno.

Oh... did you mean the other guy who was posting here? Redoubt?

He bailed. You can find him at his new blog: , which is also listed on the blogroll.

That really pisses me off, too, Kevin. The least they can do if they're going to make us pay for this, is make it WORK. Plenty of blame to go around everywhere in this disaster, but the FEMA chief just resigned, and PERHAPS; that is a positive step forward.

Blog ON, friend...

i did mean james wilson - he hasn't updated in a while. Leave it as the zone - it morphs too fast to keep changing. i think perhaps node howdt is next as a title.
and your right about dr. paul, in the standard means of things, but if we are anywhere close to a critical mass to remove the whole congress, i don't think current assumptions about special interests apply.
how do we get people to run for office to repeal rules disguised as laws?
