Commenting Systems
Am I the only one here who finds the Blogger comment system to be a royal pain in the ass?
I'd like to take an informal survey here to guage whether our bloggers and readers would prefer that we switched over to the Haloscan commenting system.
To get a feel for how the Haloscan system works, just swing over to Voice of a Veteran where he's set up his Blogger weblog to use the Haloscan commenting system instead of the Blogger commenting system.

It's effective but slow.
So... are you saying that you wanna stick with the Blogger system? I'm not sure which system you were talking about as being effective but slow. Sounds like Blogger to me.
What I don't like about the Blogger system is that you have to log in each time. With the Haloscan system, provided your firewall isn't set to delete cookies right away, your info is all there and you don't have to fill it out each time you comment on a blog that uses Haloscan.
Pretty much where I'm coming from with bringing this up is my concern that the less user-friendly Blogger system might inhibit reader responses.
Blogger is effective but slow. I don't think it matters either way.
My complaint about Blogger comment is that it won't ever let me sign in, even though I am a Blogger user. I have to open another window, open my blog, sign in there, come back to this window and hit the back button before the dimwitted thing will let me comment. It's the same username and password either way, but that's the only way I can get it to work.
I've had the same basic problem that Alex reports. Lately I've not been having problems. But, prior to a couple weeks ago I routinely had great difficulty getting Blogger to accept either of my two valid username/password combos - PK used to be on the Blogger platform before we switched to Movable Type. Often I would either simply choose to not leave a comment or I'd type in the blog I'm associated with and my name so that the readers wouldn't just see "Anonymous" listed as the commenter. And that's on two different computers with completely different internet access.
HaloScan is MUCH better. It's not perfect, and sometimes it stalls, but much less frequently than Blogger does. I know other bloggers who simply won't comment on pages using Blogger comments because it's such a hassle. If you switch to HaloScan, I'd bet that you'll see an increase in comments...
Interesting, I just read a post over at Paul's Posted Notes that addresses this very issue. I definitely prefer Haloscan. Just my 2 cents.
CosmoGRRL!
Commenting? I have beefs with with the publishing engine. On the surface, it appears simple, easy and effective. It sucks. I wish I could say exactly why, but I cannot.
All I know is that over the past weekend I had done no less than 8 hours of research and writing on two detailed posts regarding North Korea arming Philipine Islamic terrorists and taking orders for mini-submarines. Not a light issue to master the information...even if that's your gig. When the post published, they were incomplete and error ridden and totally useless.
Yes, the idiot between the keyboard and the seat should have written in Word or otherwise saved the text...after all, the idiot is an IT engineer...but I am so mad (still) that I want to blame it all on Blogger. (Feeling like a socialist when I cry 'But why should I have to save it first? It should just work!)
Seriously though, don't mix Holoscan with Blogspot. It's worse than dealing with Blogger comments. If you don't want to take my word for it, e-mail Chester at The Adventures of Chester. He tried it. If you want to use holoscan, migrate off Blogger completely. (Though I have not gone to Voice of a Veteran yet to see there....so...)
Gotta sleep now...and I wonder why I can't get up in the mornings....sheeesh...
I can certainly relate to what you're saying, Vet. I blog primarily over at Preemptive Karma. I fact I'm PK's resident hapless, severely underskilled IT person. PK was on Blogger for many months before we switched over to Movable Type. I lost one or two posts the way you describe, and my co-blogger Carla I think lost one. Although she was clearly the smarter of the two 'cause she'd type her's up in Word first so that she never actually lost anything.
Anyway, the entire time PK was on Blogger we used Haloscan and never had a problem at all with it.
