Watching Gonzales
I was talking to my roommate last night about the next Attorney General and I said I was suprised that little had been said about Alberto Gonzales' record in Texas or DC. He commented that it was most likely relief, as he himself felt, over the fact that Ashcroft would be leaving soon.
There are two issues that should be looked into regarding his record because it may be that much will not change.
1. Gonzales wrote 57 memos regarding the issue of granting clemency to convicts facing execution. Those memo's have become controversial because they rarely included any information that may lead a govenor to commute a sentance. One such time was a convict who had been beaten as a child with electric cords, hangers, water hoses, etc. etc.
2. The second issue concerns the torture of detainees at Guantanamo. As I previously posted, It has been confirmed that torture has occured at Guantanamo. He rationalized away the Geneva Convention as being quaint.
The two above links from the VIllage Voice make for interesting reading.
The conclusion one can draw.....nothing will change at the Justice Department with the changing of the guard.
