Texas controls our education
I saw a fascinating and scary piece on PBS regarding the power of Texas to control the content of textbooks. Here's the deal. Texas buys it's textbooks en bloc for the entire state. Therefore, because of the purchasing power, publishers will bow to demands of the Texas board that makes those decisions.
This affects all of us because publishers can't afford to make a conservative version and a liberal version of the same textbook. So, what Texas demands is included in all textbooks across the country.
Well, we now have the latest demand from the Texas board. In the health textbooks, wording was changed to make marriage, which was refered to as between two people, to read as between a man and a woman. Whether the change is good or bad is another issue.
What is the issue is the power Texas has to make those changes.

Yes Texas is the Alpha and Omega in this issue, some place has to be and why not a state that has strong bedrock morals.
I am glad there is a anchor in education to tie us as a people to the morals of our past and present.
I saw the same PBS special and though i found it slanted to the left, i did find it educational.
I really don't have an issue with what Texas decides. However, I think it is important that everyone knows the control they have.
